Spices are the backbone of cooking. Honestly, without spices so many of our standard dishes would cease to taste like anything, let alone anything good! Traditional spice combinations are the secret behind many recipes. Let’s break down some of the most popular spice combinations and show you the easy way to make these awesome spice mixes at home!

Indian Seasoning

Indian cuisine varies by region, but there are spices that are consistent throughout some of the more common dishes. Indian dishes rely heavily on spices with a strong flavor profile that has been sautéed in fat (butter) before adding the vegetables and meat. Try this recipe for a decent “DIY” Indian spice mix that you can create to use in your cooking:

2 tablespoons of ground coriander

1 tablespoon of ground cumin

1 ½ teaspoons of ginger powder

1 teaspoon of mustard powder

1 teaspoon of garlic powder

1 teaspoon of turmeric

½ teaspoon of ground cardamom

½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon of nutmeg

1 dried bay leaf (added while cooking, remove before eating)

Italian Seasoning

Italian seasoning is one of the most popular spice mixes that you can buy and is known for how fresh it can make pasta and meat dishes. Many Italian dishes aren’t seasoned with anything besides olive oil and herbs, and while the best flavor comes from fresh herbs, dried herbs will work when there aren’t other options available. You can make your own Italian seasoning mix with the following herbs and spices:

1 ½ teaspoon of dried oregano

1 teaspoon of dried basil

1 teaspoon of dried parsley

½ teaspoon of onion powder

¼ teaspoon of garlic powder

Mexican Seasoning

Chili peppers are probably one of the most important spices in Mexican cuisine because it balances out the heaviness of the protein, dairy, and corn that is commonly part of popular Mexican dishes. You can make your own amazing Mexican spice combination with the following:

1 tablespoon of coriander

1 tablespoon of chili powder

1 teaspoon of garlic powder
