Falling into a rut is easier than one might think. When you’re going through the same motions day to day, doing the same daily tasks, and seeing the same people, it’s all too easy to lose track of what you’re doing and settle into a rut. This is normal for a lot of people, so don’t be alarmed if you feel like you’re in a funk. There are some easy ways that you can get yourself out of a rut and while they might look simple they can be very effective!

Eat Healthy

When you eat foods that are full of the vitamins and minerals that your body needs, you’ll feel energized and balanced. Eating junk food when you’re in a rut can make you feel worse, so try and avoid processed foods and focus on eating fresh, whole foods to help make you feel better - no matter how tempted you are! You’ll find that eating healthy improves your mood, you’re more focused, and your attention span lasts longer than normal. Try nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables to maximize good calories. Foods like avocados, eggs, and sweet potatoes are a great to start!

Tidy Up

Tidying up your home can be a great way to get out of a funk! Not only is it actually healthy for you to clean (say goodbye to the dust bunnies and lingering bacteria) but it gets you up and moving. I find that a clean house can help elevate your mood and enhance your concentration. A tidy house allows for a much cleaner (and focused) mind. Next time you find you really need to focus give your house a quick tidy and you’ll be surprised at how much it helps.

Pamper Yourself

Staying healthy is a great way to look after yourself - eating right and regular exercise it can help you feel a million times better - but you’ll be happy to know that pampering yourself is actually REALLY good for you too! Self-care will help you feel super refreshed, recharged and ready to take on the world. Get a message, a pedicure, or book a whole day at the spa to relax and restore your mental balance. When you get a massage, it not only feels ah-maaaazing, but it helps reduce the amount of cortisol in your body too, which is great because that’s the hormone that can trigger an increase in stomach fat. To put it lightly, taking that time to go get a massage is really just for your own health, am I right?

Play Mind Games

It’s just as important to keep your mind fit as it is to keep your body fit. And just like your body is exhausted after a big workout, your brain can be exhausted after a significant mental challenge. Keep your brain active by doing crosswords, taking a class, or reading, and when you know you’ve had a busy and tiring day, take it easy and let your mind recover with a good night’s sleep.

Try Different Water

I know, water is just water, right? Not today! Try taking some of your favourite fruits, vegetables or herbs and put them in your water bottle to spice it up! By putting lemon, lime, cucumber, or berries with mint into your water, it can be a nice little surprise every time you take a sip from your water bottle. It will help you stay hydrated and energized.

Try New Foods

Next time you’re at the grocery store, pick out some new foods that you don’t normally buy. You can research recipes in advance so you know what to do. Try doing this once or twice a week and you’ll find that this small change in routine can help get you out of a rut in a big way. It helps you learn about new foods, improves your nutrition, and stimulates your senses. Preparing new dishes can even be fun for some people! You CAN break out of a slump with a few minor changes to your routine.
