Top 5 Movies About Fashion Jun 8, 2017 by Alex (Day Styles)

Do you need an escape from your day to day life? The world of fashion is endlessly entertaining, whether the stories are real or fictional. Below, we're sharing five of our favorite movies about the fashion industry. Sit back, relax, and let yourself be carried away to the land of glossy magazines and stilettos.

1. Funny Face

We'll start with this classic film. The 1957 Audrey Hepburn film set the stage for all fashion films that followed. The story revolves around a plain Jane bookstore employee who is discovered by a photographer and is taken away to the big city where she's made over in true rom-com fashion. Today, the scenes of Paris, the beautiful wardrobe, and the love story are still enough to make you swoon. The singing, the dancing, the dialogue, and the costumes make this film a staple for any fashion lover or movie buff.

2. The Devil Wears Prada

Alternate Realities

The movie may be fictional, but the experience of the author whose novel was turned into this 2006 comedy was entirely real. The movie follows Andrea as she scores an assistant job with Miranda Priestly, an obvious Anna Wintour clone. Meryl Streep's performance as Miranda made the movie an instant classic, but the clothing alone was enough to make any fashion enthusiast watch it over and over. Patricia Fields, the wardrobe maven of Sex and the City, was in charge and The Devil Wears Prada had the most expensive movie wardrobe of all time.

3. The September Issue

Speaking of Anna Wintour, the 2009 documentary about the fashion industry icon earns a place on the list as well. The film offers an incredible behind the scenes look at the process of creating Vogue's fall fashion issue. You'll sit in on meetings between Wintour, Vogue's editor in chief, and her staff as they discuss every detail of creating the issue with over 800 pages. The politics within the Vogue office create a juicy plot and the glimpses of fashion shows and designer features are drool worthy.

4. Coco Before Chanel

When it comes to the fashion industry, there are few names more recognizable than Coco Chanel. This 2009 French film gives an interesting look at the designer's life before she became one of the most well-known women in the industry. From humble beginnings in childhood to a job as a bar performer, you'll learn about the struggles Chanel went through professionally as well as personally. The story is honest, heartbreaking, and inspiring.

5. Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf

IMP Awards

Moving on to the retail side of fashion, Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf is a love letter to the amazing New York City store. The documentary offers interviews with stylists, designers, employees, and celebrities who love to shop at Bergdorf. You'll see hilarious commentary from Isaac Mizrahi and an appearance from the Olsen twins. One of the most fascinating pieces is the process of designing the incredible window displays that stop visitors in their tracks on New York City streets.

The fashion industry is so over the top and glamorous that it only makes sense that its stories are perfect for the big screen. Let yourself get swept away by the excitement, drama, and insane clothing when you watch these five fashion films.
