Summer Style 2016: Stripes! Feb 22, 2016 by Sarah (Day Styles)
It’s time to start thinking about your upcoming summer wardrobe! The newest Spring/Summer 2016 collections have appeared on runways all over the world and in different magazines. One of the biggest trends we are currently seeing on the runway is stripes. Stripes are a pattern that we need to be somewhat careful with when creating our looks and outfits. Here are three great ways to incorporate stripes into your wardrobe this summer.
If you opt for a striped dress, or even a two-piece striped outfit, the type of stripe you pick out is crucial to how your outfit is going to turn out. If you’re new to wearing stripes, keep this one universal rule in mind – choose vertical stripes (long) over horizontal stripes (wide). Vertical stripes have a way of tricking the eye and making your body look longer and slimmer. The thinner the stripe, the easier the pattern is to incorporate into your everyday clothing. If you’re looking to take fashion risks, you can opt to include a horizontal stripe! Very thin stripes are the most flattering when horizontal while extremely big stripes are a close second.
This is probably the easiest way to pull off stripes with the least risk. Find a thin, spring or summer jacket that is striped and wear it over your outfit in the evenings. Or you could wear either a shirt with stripes or a skirt with stripes and pair it with another pattern or a neutral piece. If you really hate wearing stripes on your actual clothing, you can find a pair of striped pumps or find a purse with a striped pattern. There are a lot of really easy ways to incorporate stripes into your outfit, even if you don’t like to wear them on your clothes!
Mixing patterns is not for those who want to be safe with their fashion. It can be tricky, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll become the fashion mogul of your social circle. With stripes, you can pretty much consider them a neutral pattern unless the colors are wild and bright. The theory behind mixing patterns is quite simple. If the stripes are thick/large, pair them with a small pattern. If the stripes are thin/small, pair it with a big/bold pattern! People tend to get scared when it comes to mixing patterns and prints, but stripes are one of the easiest patterns to pair.
Striped dresses are the most popular item we are currently seeing walk across the runway. From fitted to flowy, there’s something for everyone this season. Play around with hemlines and style so you can find one that works best for your body type and have fun with it!
