Summer Style 2016: Statement Sunglasses Feb 23, 2016 by Sarah (Day Styles)

Summer 2016 is all about the statement sunglasses. They’re big and they’re flashy! The colors are bright and the frames are playful and over the top! Sunglasses are the perfect accessory if you really want to get noticed and leave a lasting impression. Have fun with these different shapes and styles this summer.

Oversized Sunglasses

Tiny sunglasses are very trendy right now, but oversized sunglasses will never go out of style. The Spring/Summer 2016 runways were full of oversized sunglasses and the shapes and colors were everything you could imagine. Floral embellishments from Dolce & Gabbana, candy-striped butterfly frames from Gucci, oversized squares from Cg and a combination of oversized and cat-eyed frames from Marni.

Cat Eye Sunglasses

Cat eye sunglasses first became popular last year and this year it hasn’t changed, but the shape has been upgraded slightly. This year we see a lot more designers pairing the trend of cat eye sunglasses with features from round frames. Anna Sui incorporated floral details in her runway show, and Dries Van Noten used a yellow cat eye with a bottomless frame.

Geometrical Shapes

If big and round sunglasses don’t suit you, or you don’t like them, geometrical frames may be just what you’re looking for! We have seen some futuristic sunglasses and other pieces that look like they came straight from the era of Studio 54. Geometric combinations such as squares and pentagons coming together really set certain sunglasses apart from others.

Dramatic Details

It’s all about the details this season, and sunglasses are no exception. Designers are paying attention to the smallest details on some glasses while others have huge detailing all over. Chanel sunglasses were multiple colors, but shared the same precise, engraved details on the frames, while Dolce & Gabbana had more prominent details on the sides of the glasses as well as the frames for a more dramatic look.

Popular Aviators

Aviators are still a popular choice this season, but we’re seeing them go to the next level. Different colors and different sizes are a sure way to spruce up the traditional aviator while keeping everything on trend. Chanel used a range of vivid hues in their frames this season while House of Holland used bold wire frames for their aviators.

Bold Exotic Shapes

Being bold with multicolored frames is one thing, but having two differently shaped lenses is a whole different look on its own. This year, animal shapes have prowled down the runway, and we’ve also seen lenses shaped like stars and hearts on the same pair of sunglasses! So really have some fun with a flashy frame and go big and go bold this summer with a new pair of sunglasses.
