5 Tips to Get Ahead In Your Career Mar 29, 2017 by Sarah (Day Styles)
With more and more women are achieving high-ranking positions in the workforce, it’s no wonder that more women aspire to new leadership positions. But, as a woman, what do you need to reach your goals and get the position you want? Well, you have to take what you want. We don’t mean take in a bad way. Don’t go taking people’s lunch out of the fridge, that doesn’t count. It means that you know exactly what you’re doing and have confidence in your abilities. Don’t be afraid to go above and beyond your pay grade - taking projects and assignments that will help advance your career in the long run. So, what can you do to get that dream job? We have some tips.
Celebrate Your Tasks
While some tasks may not be the glitz and glam that you want, or don’t get recognized the way that you had hoped for, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t celebrate your daily work. Getting a good grip on every element of your job is an important learning process. Don’t view the small tasks as unimportant or unworthy of acknowledgement, think of them as necessary stepping stones towards the goals you have in mind.
Following up is an important aspect when it comes to taking what you want. Following up correctly can show that you’re interested in your projects and eager to learn more about what you’re doing. You can follow up with managers, teammates, and subordinates face-to-face or via email but just make sure you keep it causal! Remember to be patient and considerate and give the person some time to let you know how you’re doing.
Make Strategic Connections
Find out who you need to align yourself with in your company and reach out. Invite them out for coffee and start building a professional relationship with them. When they hear how persistent you are and how much of a “go-getter” you can be, your name will come to mind when they have a new position available. The more people that have your back, the better!
Don’t Be Afraid
If you need help with something, don’t be afraid to ask. Willingness to learn and checking your ego at the door are positive traits in people. If you want a specific role in your company, don’t be afraid to ask questions to find out how to get there! People love to discuss their own jobs and you can learn a lot in the process.
Stick to Your Commitments
When you’ve made up your mind about your job/career, stick to it and give your goals 100% of your focus. Take small steps each day that are going to push you towards your ultimate goal and don’t lose focus of what you’re doing. Don’t take no for an answer, tap into any resources that you have, and just keep moving no matter what you do. Even if it’s slow going at first, persistence and commitment can pay off in a big way. Never be afraid to work for your dream job!
