6 Reasons Why You Should Start Your New Year's Resolutions Now Nov 15, 2016 by Sarah (Day Styles)
If you’re like me, you probably have a standard list of New Year’s resolutions that you set for yourself each year and then forget about them after six weeks! But why do we wait until January 1st to set ourselves new goals, why can’t we start them TODAY? A new year gives the sense of a clean slate for a lot of people, but it can also delay self-improvement and give us an excuse to avoid making hard choices. Really, why can’t your new life start now and skip the stress? Here are some great reasons why you should take some of your regular resolutions and put them into action today.
Every Day Is A New Opportunity
You shouldn’t wait for a specific time or date to start grabbing hold of your goals. Take the necessary actions to make them happen sooner rather than later. By setting your goals far into the future, you’re saying that today, or the present moment, doesn’t count. There’s no time like the present, so once you have decided to change your life, start then and there!
You Have More Time
Think of how many days are between now and the new year. That’s a long time, and you could accomplish a lot between now and then! If you feel like you need to wait until the new year to take action, you’re missing some valuable time that you could be using to your advantage. If your goal is to lose weight, think of how much progress you could make between now and January, and how much better you’ll feel between now and then! Just listen to Benjamin Franklin: “Don’t put off until tomorrow, what you can do today.”
The “Right Time” Can Be Anytime You Want!
How often have you waited for a sign, something to tell you that it’s the perfect time to get started on your next big project? How long have you waited until you’ve felt “ready” to take on something new and challenging? If you spend your life waiting until you think the stars are going to align in your favor, I have a secret for you: it’s already your time if you believe you’re ready. Often it’s your doubts and fears that are holding you back, so if you stay positive and believe in yourself, you’ll be ready to take on the world. You don’t need a sign. Instead, you need to get started right now - just believe in yourself!
You’ll Become More Organized
It will be much harder to achieve your dreams if you keep pushing them until the last minute. The longer you wait, the shorter the time you’ll have to achieve your goals. Almost all of us have a laundry list of aspirations: everything from exercising more to getting a new job or going traveling. If you delay, suddenly you’ll be forced to cut down until you’re only working on one goal - and then, none! If you start now, you’re giving yourself time to get organized, set a schedule, and get everything done in a reasonable amount of time.
You’ll Get Rid Of Unnecessary Stress
New Year’s Resolutions carry a huge amount of pressure (mostly from yourself) to ensure you complete the goals that you set out for yourself. The more people hype their New Year’s Resolutions, the more pressure, stress, and disappointment you may feel if you don’t complete all of them as expected. If you start ahead of time, with not as much pressure, you’ll be more likely to commit to them long term.
You’ll Set More Realistic Goals
One of the most important factors when setting goals is to ensure that your aspirations are realistic. The larger and more grandiose your plans, the more likely it will be that you fail. Don’t try and impress people with New Year’s Goals unless it’s something that’s realistic for you to accomplish, because you’ll end up kicking yourself later. When there is less pressure and no one to impress, set yourself a realistic plan and stick to it. By the time New Year’s rolls around, you’ll feel more confident, happier, and ready to tackle your next resolution!
