Let’s face it - some people (such as myself) are just not morning people. You may find it hard to find the motivation to leave your warm, comfortable, cozy, perfect bed, but (unfortunately) there are some seriously great benefits that come out of becoming an early riser. When you have to get up in the morning for work or school it’s even harder, but we realized that making the transition from “sleep all day” to “up at the break of dawn” isn’t impossible and has some significant advantages, from relaxation to productivity. Let me give you some examples as to why you (yes, you) should start waking up earlier too.
Let’s be real here - mother nature is vain. Every morning nature provides with a beautiful, even idyllic, sunrise…and every morning many of us skip the show and stay in bed. No more! Grab yourself a cup of coffee and curl up with a blanket by your window and watch the sunrise. If you’re really adventurous, snap yourself a pretty Instagram photo and show the world how awesome you are for getting your day started early. Maybe you’ll inspire more people to do the same!
Your appreciation of the early morning might vary, depending on if you live alone, with roommates, or with your family. But, in general, the world is much quieter during the early hours of the morning. You’re now part of the minority that has chosen to be up before everyone else, and it’s an amazing time to embrace the quiet and clear your head. Read a book, get your schedule prepped for the day, do some yoga, or go for a run – all before everyone else is awake and coherent. You’ll wonder quickly why you didn’t decide to be an early riser sooner!
Now that you’re waking up earlier on a regular basis, you can start tackling your routine earlier in the day. You can use this time to get your workout in for the day, prep your lunch before work so you don’t have to buy yet another soggy sandwich, or head to the office before everyone else. Getting these things out of the way sooner rather than later can help reduce your workload throughout the day and, after knocking these things off your list, you’ll have less to worry about when you head home for a relaxing night on the couch.
Who doesn’t love breakfast! For many people, breakfast is the best meal of the day. Whip up your favourite caffeinated concoction, put on some eggs and bacon, or blend up your favourite smoothie. Pretty soon that breakfast “that you wished you had time to eat, but instead you slept in” becomes reality sitting on a plate in front of you. Talk about a perfect start to the morning.
One major benefit of getting up early is that when night falls around, you’re naturally tired. The extra hours you gain from getting up early shifts your body clock and you’ll feel more tired earlier in the evening - and that’s a good thing. Going to be earlier, especially when it’s dark out during the fall and winter, is much better for your body’s natural rhythms. This is what your body is supposed to do! After being so productive all day long, you deserve an early night. Throw on your favourite PJs and call it a day! Until tomorrow, when you’re up to meet the sunrise again.
