Amazing Ways to Be More Productive When You Don’t Feel Like It

Dec 19, 2016 by Sarah (Day Styles)

As the holidays get closer there are going to be more than a few days when we’re distracted by thousands of different tasks and can’t stay productive, especially on the job. Sometimes it’s possible to kick back and relax, but not when you need to get working, shopping, planning, cooking…everything! The good news is that there are simple tricks you can use to stay productive - even if you don’t feel like it!

Take A Break

When you find that you’re sitting at your desk but doing nothing, turn your screen off and put your phone away and take a five-minute break. It’s one of the best ways to get quickly recharged! Go for a short walk, get a coffee or tea, or a drink a big glass of water to help wake up! If you’re truly brain-dead, try taking a quick ten-minute power nap in your car or on the office couch. You’ll feel a lot better and much more productive.

Get Your Blood Pumping

One of the best ways to get over the midday slump is to get your blood pumping - so get up and move! Exercising early in the morning is a great way to clear your mind, refresh your sense, and keep yourself in shape - it will prepare you to take on the whole day! If exercise in the morning isn’t your thing, grab your workout gear and make sure you use it on your lunch break. It will wake you up and get you prepared to take on the afternoon.

Take Action

Muster the energy and just do what you need to do! Think about how great it will feel when you buckle down and actually finish your current project. If it helps, make a “to-do” list and start with the easiest task. This will get the momentum going and will get you motivated to take on the bigger tasks over the course of the day - and you’ll thank yourself when you’re done!

Find What Motivates You

It’s hard to stay motivated when you don’t care about what you’re doing. When you can find out WHY you’re doing what you’re doing (and it’s not always easy), try and remind yourself every morning. That way, you might be more motivated to tackle the day. It can really be anything, from graduating to fulfilling your passion or just getting your next paycheque and going on vacation. Anything is easier when you know “why” you need to get it done.

Keep Your Gratitude

If you want to stay positive during the day, before you even get out of bed in the morning say out loud what it is you’re thankful and grateful for in your life. Try not to take anything for granted, be thankful for how lucky you are to have the life you’re living, and if you don’t LOVE your job, remember the other reasons you have for sticking it out! You’d be surprised what a grateful attitude can do for your positivity.

Work In Increments

Sometimes it’s easier to tackle a project if you break it down into smaller chunks. Having these smaller tasks, instead of one giant task, makes it a little bit easier to get the ball rolling. It’s also important to incorporate breaks into your work schedule or you’ll find you get worn out, dragged down, and totally stuck.

Take It Day by Day

Don’t be afraid to say “no” to additional tasks that you can’t manage. Limit your workload to something you feel is doable, because if it’s not you’ll be tempted to procrastinate and stress! Remind yourself that there are only a certain number of hours in each day, and try to be completely present during each of your tasks to make sure you do them completely and to the best of your ability. That way you’ll be more productive and less stressed.

You can use these tricks all year round, but it’s especially useful during the holiday rush. Thankfully, the new year is just around the corner.
