Types of Wine, Food Pairing and Celeb Vineyards Sep 24, 2015 by Cathy (Day Styles)
Wine is supposed to be about the experience, not just the drink. Many people are passionate about wine and others just grab the cheap stuff to get drunk. To each their own I guess. Let’s have a look at the common types of wine so you can figure out if you want to be a connoisseur or perhaps just an occasional sipper.
Types of Grapes
Wine is made with grapes but not the kind you’ll find on the grocery shelf. Vitis vinifera or wine grapes are tiny and sweet with seeds and have a really thick skin. Just to give you perspective, there are well over a thousand different types of wine grapes. Here are a few of the favorites…
Wine Blends And Single-Variety Wines
When you are drinking wine made from one type of grape, it’s called a varietal wine. When you add more than one type of grape, it makes sense you now have a blend. Many wines are recognized and named after the place in which they originated. I’m sure you’ve heard of “Chanti,” a specialty Sangiovese-based blend all the way from Tuscany, Italy. Did You Know? That vintage is referenced to what year the grapes were grown. Commonly people think of this as how old the wine is. You can also get NV or Non-Vintage wines that can’t really be numbered because they are a blend of numerous different vintages. I guess they could average the years if they wanted to get fancy-dancy though.
