What Is Golden Milk And Why Should You Drink It? Jan 23, 2017 by Sarah (Day Styles)
Drinking something warm before bed has become a ritual for me - helping me to relax, get warm, and ready for bed after a long day! There’s a new nightcap out there for people who love warm bedtime drinks as much as I do, and it’s called “Golden Milk.” What is it? Is it an expensive beverage only for the elites of the world? No - it’s a very healthy drink combining coconut milk and turmeric. Here’s what it is and why you should consider drinking it at night.
What Is It?
Golden milk is an ancient Ayurvedic drink from India that combines coconut milk (and sometimes coconut oil) with the super powerful spice, turmeric. Sometimes people add a small amount of black pepper to allow the body to absorb the turmeric better. The drink is very high in electrolytes and improves the body’s ability to digest food properly.
Turmeric has some different health benefits associated with it. It is a super anti-inflammatory spice and has been reported to have a therapeutic effect that can help fight various diseases, including cancer and possibly Alzheimer’s. It is also good for your digestion if you suffer from gas, bloating, or any intestinal discomfort. Turmeric has also been proven to have antidepressant properties, which means that those who ingest it tend to have better moods, less stress, better sleep and improved brain health!
The other half of this impressive drink is the coconut milk. Coconut milk can also help with digestion and nourishes the digestive lining thanks to the natural electrolytes and healthy fats that are found inside of it. This can help to improve conditions such as inflammation, IBS, and overall gut health in general. Some people like to add coconut oil to golden milk. Coconut oil has additional health benefits, such as a ton of antimicrobial properties thanks to the healthy fatty acids found in the oil. This can elevate your levels of good cholesterol in your blood (the HDL) - bonus!
To make the actual golden milk here is a great recipe for you. Take 1 cup of coconut milk and add in ½ teaspoon of ground turmeric. Add ½ teaspoon of ground ginger, a ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom, and 1 teaspoon of honey. Mix it up thoroughly for 2 minutes (either shake it in a jar or whisk it heavily). Strain the mixture after you blend it up and either warm it up for something to sip on at night, or add in ice cubes if you want something to cool you off - either way, this drink is FULL of health benefits and is great for your digestive health!
