Natural Ways to Keep Your Hunger At Bay Nov 7, 2016 by Sarah (Day Styles)
I can’t be the only one that struggles with the problem of mid-day hunger and need to resist very chip, pastry, and muffin within reach! If you’re prone to hunger pangs in the middle of the workday, you don’t need an unhealthy snack - instead, check out these simple ways to control your hunger and stay energized.
Drink More Water
It’s quite possible that the hunger you’re feeling may actually be dehydration. Before diving into a bag of potato chips, try drinking a big ol’ glass of water first and see how you feel. If you remember to keep hydrated over the course of the day, you may avoid feeling hungry altogether!
Don’t Forget Breakfast
It’s true when people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Skipping breakfast can actually cause you to consume more calories during the rest of your day. Eating breakfast gets your metabolism kick-started for the rest of your day and allows your body to start burning calories quicker and more efficiently. A breakfast full of protein and healthy fats will help keep your hunger in check.
It’s true that when you decide to exercise, your hunger goes away! So, if you’re feeling a little peckish every day, instead of bringing an extra snack try putting on your runners instead. A brief run, some cardio or calisthenics, or a brisk walk might give you the energy you need and curb your appetite.
Stop Emotional Eating
Be honest with yourself and if you notice a trend where you happen to eat more when you’re stressed/sad/upset, acknowledge the problem and find something else to help you get through. Try breathing exercises, yoga, or meditation, but know that you’re not truly hungry - it’s your emotions telling you to eat.
If you tend to take a break in the afternoon with a muffin or pastry, switch it up for some delicious herbal tea. The flavors will trick your body into thinking that you’re actually eating a snack and the feeling of hunger will subside. Plus, tea is virtually calorie-free, and there are so many different flavors to choose from, you’ll never get bored.
Get Enough Protein
Protein helps keep your energy levels steady and your mood stabilized. When you get enough protein, it also helps keep you feeling full, especially when you start your morning with a protein packed breakfast. Make sure to include protein in each of your meals and snacks throughout the day and you’ll notice that your hunger cravings go down drastically!
Eat More Often
It may seem counterproductive to eat more often, but if you break up larger meals into more frequent smaller meals, you’ll find yourself less hungry throughout the course of the entire day. Try and eat five or six small meals each day instead of three larger ones, and that way you also won’t need to snack in between meals. Your energy levels will be high, your mood elevated, and you won’t crash mid-day and need to find a snack from the vending machine!
