Tips For Finding The Perfect Blazer

Jul 11, 2016 by Sarah (Day Styles)

A blazer is a staple in any woman’s wardrobe. It’s a piece that you can invest in and wear for years because blazers are ALWAYS in style! Blazers are the perfect piece to layer for working, especially if your climate is known for sudden changes in weather during the day. You can wear a blazer many different ways and styling can add or take away curves or make the last few pounds of unwanted weight magically disappear. But first you need to find the perfect blazer, so here are some great tips to help you find the right fit for you!

The Perfect Fit

Blazers can be extremely annoying if they don’t fit your body properly. If you can’t drive a car or hug a friend, then the blazer doesn’t fit you properly in the back and you need a bigger size. Try the wall test next time you’re shopping for a blazer. Put the blazer on and stand with your back near a wall and slowly lean towards the wall. If the shoulder pads hit the wall before your natural shoulder or scrunches up while you’re leaning back, it’s too big for you. If your shoulder hits the wall before the shoulder pad, then the blazer is too small. When the shoulder pads and your natural shoulder hit the wall at the same time you’ve found the right fit. Also, always make sure the seam on the shoulder is directly in line with your natural shoulder.

The Right Shape

The next step is to find the blazer that complements your shape! There are four basic shapes that dictate the best cut for your blazer.

1. Are you a straight shape? Look for a blazer that has a bit of bunching at the waist; it will create a more hourglass shape to your body without having to do anything.

2. Are you a pear shape? If your hips are wider than your upper body, you classify as a pear shape. Opt for a blazer that falls to your natural waistline and avoid blazers that fall onto your hips. You can even go for a longer blazer that falls over your hips to create a lean frame for your body.

3. Are you an inverted triangle shape? If your shoulders are the widest part of your body, you have an inverted triangle shape. Avoid shoulder pads altogether if your shoulders are already broad and go for slouchier fit blazers to even the look of your body out.

4. Are you an apple shape? If you’re wider throughout your midsection, then you’re an apple shape. Try and shop for blazers that are made from a thinner fabric and cinches in slightly while sitting just below your hips to help you create a little more of a defined waistline.

Spice Things Up

If you’re tired of wearing the same standard black blazer all the time, spice things up with prints or bright colors! Mix things up but try and buy blazers that compliment your wardrobe already so you don’t have an odd blazer that you can’t wear with anything you own! But don’t forget to play around with the shapes of your blazers. If you’re wearing pants, you may not want to wear a cropped blazer, but a cropped blazer may go perfectly with that pencil skirt hanging in your closet. If you want to wear a long and loose blazer (like a boyfriend blazer for example), pair it with your favorite skinny jeans to play with the proportions.

Play With Lapels

When you’re playing with different lapels, you want to make sure that lapels are in proportion with your body figure. Play with different shapes and sizes and find ones that look great and reflect your personality. You can find lapels that over the top with strikingly different colors, or you can find blazers with no lapels at all, it’s totally up to you. When you find the perfect fit, blazers are incredibly versatile and stylish and a great way to have fun!
