2017 Oscar Nominations Worth the Recognition Jan 27, 2017 by Sarah (Day Styles)
The Academy Award nominations have been released, and we couldn’t be more excited to see who takes home the titles. Here are some of our predictions - let us know if you agree in the comments.
The nominees for Best Picture are:
Hell or High Water
La La Land
Manchester by the Sea
There is a crowded field for “Best Pictures” this year. In our opinion, “Arrival” received an unexpected but well-deserved nod. A science fiction movie, “Arrival” is unlikely to win but is a suspenseful and thrilling film with critical acclaim and excellent reviews. “La La Land,” on the other hand, is a Hollywood movie about Hollywood movies and the Academy just seems to love this type of film, so we wouldn’t be surprised if they take the trophy. “Hidden Figures” deserves the recognition in our books, a complex and entertaining movie that doesn’t shy away from highlighting the complex intersection of racism and sexism at the heart of our greatest institutions and accomplishments.
The nominees for Best Actor are:
Casey Affleck, “Manchester by the Sea”
Andrew Garfield, “Hacksaw Ridge”
Ryan Gosling, “La La Land”
Viggo Mortensen, “Captain Fantastic”
Denzel Washington, “Fences”
Ryan Gosling is a fan favorite, especially when the film requires him to break out into song and dance alongside Emma Stone! With that being said, it seems like Denzel Washington may win this award for his amazing role in “Fences.” We don’t think Casey Affleck will get the win this year due to the critical attention he’s gotten for alleged sexual harassment in the past.
The nominees for Best Actress are:
Isabelle Huppert, “Elle”
Ruth Negga, "Loving”
Natalie Portman, "Jackie”
Emma Stone, “La La Land”
Meryl Streep, “Florence Foster Jenkins”
This year will mark the 20th Academy Award nomination for Meryl Streep, but it’s unlikely that she’ll win this year. She’s up against some heavy competition, including stand-out performances by Emma Stone and Natalie Portman. On a side note, it’s surprising that Amy Adams isn’t up for Best Actress after her performance in Arrival, when her story anchored the entire film and the movie itself is up for Best Picture!
Best Supporting Actor
The nominee for Best Supporting Actor are:
Mahershala Ali, “Moonlight”
Jeff Bridges, “Hell or High Water”
Lucas Hedges, “Manchester by the Sea”
Dev Patel, “Lion”
Michael Shannon, “Nocturnal Animals”
With all of the amazing actors on the list, it’s unfortunate they can’t all take the award. The predicted winner is Mahershala Ali for his role in “Moonlight,” and he definitely deserves the recognition for his taught and heart-rending performance.
Best Supporting Actress
The nominees for Best Supporting Actress are:
Viola Davis, “Fences”
Naomie Harris, “Moonlight”
Nicole Kidman, “Lion”
Octavia Spencer, “Hidden Figures”
Michelle Williams, “Manchester by the Sea”
Although Viola Davis is the expected winner for her role in “Fences,” it’s pretty safe to say that Octavia Spencer also deserves recognition in the powerful film “Hidden Figures.” It’s been a great year with some amazing performances, and we can’t wait to watch the party and the results!
